IELTS or PTE: which test should you take

Most universities and visa applications accept either IELTS or PTE as proof of English proficiency, but the two tests are quite different in format. Understanding those differences can help you choose the test that suits your strengths.

IELTS uses a mix of written and spoken formats, with a face to face speaking test, while PTE is fully computer based, including the speaking section. If you feel more confident speaking into a microphone than to an examiner, PTE may suit you better.

Always check your specific university and visa requirements first. Some accept only one of the two tests, or set a different minimum score for each.

Whichever test you choose, consistent practice under timed conditions is the biggest factor in reaching your target score. Our IELTS and PTE test prep classes cover both formats so you can decide with confidence.
